Mental Health : Psychological & Sociological Factors

The people we meet everyday have various kinds of characters. Some of them always look happy and cheerful, although they may have certain problems. They donÂ’t grumble and they always do their work as well as possible. Everyone likes people of this kind. On the other hand, there are some people who are never happy but always complain. They donÂ’t work well and always find mistakes in other peopleÂ’s work. They are constantly worrying, but they donÂ’t understand why. People of this kind never find happiness in their lives. Psychologists say that his kind of person easily catches certain diseases that are difficult to cure.

On the other hand, there are some people who are never happy but always complain. They don’t work well and always find mistakes in other people’s work. They are constantly worrying, but they don’t understand why. People of this kind never find happiness in their lives. Psychologists say that his kind of person easily catches certain diseases that are difficult to cure.

There are also people who make trouble for others. They deceive other people and don’t respect their rights. Because there are many different kinds of characters, psychologists have done research to find reasons for people’s behavior. Such research tries to find the answer to the question: “Why do some people never have any peace of mind and why don’t they find happiness in their lives?” As a result of this search, a new branch of psychology was started.

This new science, which is called “Mental Health”, has become well known in developed countries. In these countries, the main aim of research is to find a way to prevent people from having mental trouble. In developing country, the science of “Mental Health” is not yet well known. There are many definitions of Mental Health. I shall attempt to explain a few of them, in the hope that an understanding of this term will be useful for readers.

First definition says: “Mental Health is a way to escape from mental trouble (neurosis) and mental disease.” We say someone has mental trouble when he worries about something, but he doesn’t know why. He feels tired and doesn’t want to work.On the other hand, a person who has mental disease had ideas and opinions that are not based upon reality and he is not aware of everything he does. We usually call such a person “a mad man”.

Second definition says: “Mental Health is the ability to adapt to oneself, to other people, to society and to environment where we live.” If you want to adapt to yourself, first of all you have to know yourself, and your strong and weak points; you have to accept yourself and do everything according to your ability. Besides this, you have to know and understand other people from many points of view, not only from your own. Don’t only have your own opinion about a person, but find out what other people think about him. You have to know the strengths and weaknesses of other people and their good as well as their bad behavior. (For instance, someone may be an expert at tennis, but cannot sing at all; he may be very friendly at work but very rude to his family). Your environment is also important. Environment includes the society in which you live, manners, laws, customs and religion. You must know about your environment so you won’t make mistakes. Always be polite, don’t break laws, and try to fit in with your situation. Nobody likes a rude person and society has punishments for people who break the law. So according to this definition, a person who has “mental health” is a person who understands himself, other people, his society, his environment, and he is able to adapt himself.

Third definition says that Mental Health is knowing about your own character and using this knowledge to develop your character in the best possible way, so that you will be happy and make other people happy. If a person’s mind is not well developed, he does not get on well with other people. He is never happy, and easily gets angry with himself and others. He has no peace of mind. His bad behavior is caused by mental trouble. Some people have a character that is well developed but they use their intelligence to deceive other people. People of this kind have mental trouble, too.

Fourth definition of Mental Health says: “Mental Health is a situation where the mental elements of a person work in harmony, so that he is able to face and settle all of his problems, use his ability in the best way and be happy.”  This means that the mental elements, such as thoughts, feelings, opinions, ideas and the way of life must be in agreement. For example, Mr. X had an idea about how he could make himself rich. His feelings said that he would be rich and happy if he is inherited all father’s property, so he made a plan to make his father give him all the property. However, when he thought carefully, he realized that it was not good if he makes himself happy meanwhile his brothers and sisters become unhappy. Perhaps he would be rich, but he would not really be happy because he would always worry about his relatives hating him. When his ideas and feelings enable to do something wrong, his thinking helped him. Thus he was saved from mental trouble.

It has been said that a strong religious belief helps people to escape from mental trouble and mental disease. A person who has a strong belief in God thinks about a problem instead of being guided only by his feelings. Religious education is very important because it helps build people’s characters. Clever people who deceive people or commit crimes are of no use to the community but people who are happy and think about other people’s happiness can help a country’s development.
